Wineries on the Central Coast

Harmony Cellars

The history of Harmony Cellars is as unique as the wines produced at this boutique, coastal winery. Harmony Cellars Winery has been owned and operated by Kim and Chuck Mulligan since its doors opened in 1989. Chuck has been the winemaker from the very start, handcrafting all wines in the “working” redwood winery situated just behind the tasting room.

The Mulligan’s adventure in winemaking began at a tasting room in Santa Barbara during an escape weekend from their yuppie life in Orange County. It was there that Chuck caught the winemaking bug. Six months later found Chuck enrolled at Fresno State University actively pursuing a second degree in Enology. Just prior to graduation, he was offered the Assistant Winemaker position at Estrella winery in Paso Robles. Estrella was sold to the Beringer group (and renamed “Meridian”) in 1988, and Chuck continued on as Assistant Winemaker.

During his tenure at Estrella and Meridian, Chuck consulted for various small wineries in the area. This small side job soon turned into a full time job allowing Chuck to “jump ship” and start Harmony Cellars in 1989. Together, Chuck and Kim produced 2,000 cases of wine that first year in a small rented space. 1993 saw the completion of their winery in Harmony. Five years later, the couple completed construction on an adjacent tasting room offering with sweeping views of beautiful Harmony Valley. Both the winery and tasting room sit on land that has been in Kim’s family for over four generations.

A complete remodel and expansion of Harmony Cellars’ hilltop tasting room was completed in September 2008. The entire Harmony Cellars Crew invite you to stop by and spend an afternoon in Harmony. Delight in the fine wines, warm ambience and rich history of Harmony

Stolo

Stolo Vineyards

Stolo Vineyards and Winery is a small producer of highly acclaimed wines located in the SLO Coat AVA in Cambria, California. 95% of Stolo Wines are sold onsite in the tasting room on the estate in Cambria. The balance of the wines are distributed to restaurants and fine wine shops in San Luis Obispo and Santa Barbara Counties.

The Property was purchased in 2002 by Don and Charlene Stolo. The label was started in 2004. The property was previously a dairy farm and creamery in the late 1800’s through the early 1900’s, then used for ranching and farming various crops. The total property is 53 acres.

The Vineyards consist of 23 planted acres. Ten additional estate acres are available for planting, which we will plant slowly through the coming years. Both the Creekside Vineyard and Hillside Vineyard are 95% dry farmed. We have drip throughout both vineyards, but over the past few years have only irrigated a few times during the driest growing seasons. We get plenty of moisture from the coastal fog and we like to force the vines to concentrate flavors by providing minimal additional water.

The Hillside Vineyard was planted in 1998: 3 acres of Chardonnay, 3 acres of Pinot Noir, 3 acres of Syrah. The soil type is Monterey shale with roughly 6” of top organic top soil.

The Creekside Vineyard is 14 acres planted starting in 2008 and we have added on slowly over the years Varietals are: Sauvignon Blanc, Gewurztraminer, Pinot Noir, Syrah (first vintage is 2015), Chardonnay (first vintage will be 2016).

Winery/Tasting Room: the wines made at Stolo are 100% from estate grown fruit. We process, age, and bottle all onsite. The winery and tasting room building was built in 2012. We opened on Thanksgiving weekend 2012. Prior to the tasting room opening we started our wine club, sold wine through our website. We barrel age Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Syrah in French oak. The Sauvignon Blanc, Gewürztraminer, are either aged in stainless or neutral barrels (no oak flavor is imparted to these wines). 2015 production was 1500 cases. We grow a little bit each year, in 2022 the vineyards yielded roughly 3000 cases total.

Stolo’s large public outdoor space, referred to as “The Meadow”, is the site of Stolo’s Summer “Music in the Meadow ” live music series every Thursday June-September and one Sunday in each month. We also make the Meadow available to a select few local North Coast nonprofits for fundraising events and the occasional private wedding or event.
